We went to Hennies Randburg to watch the rugby and celebrate my cousin’s birthday. We made an entry in their “burn the bill” competition. After the game, they called up the “burn the bill” winners, a small table of four people, and announced that they had won the competition with just 1 point off the final score. We were confused about why they had won and we didn’t, as our guess was also just 1 point off.We asked the manager about this and he was immediately aggressive and defensive. He was adamant that he had all the forms that were filled in, and our table was not there. We said that there had to be another form with our table on it because we had definitely filled it in. He accused us of lying. The floor manager and our waitress confirmed that they definitely remembered us filling in the form and had no idea why it wasn’t there. After the floor manager spoke to the general manager, the general manager told us that we would be getting R600 of our bill and “that’s the end of it”. Not one apology for accusing us of lying, and they still spoke to us as if we were criminals. We accepted this “win” anyway, as the night had been ruined and we did not care about the money, just about how badly we’d been treated. After all the drama, the tables around us started to ask what had happened. As soon as other tables started noticing, my cousin was called up to the stage and it was announced that he had also won and they then burnt his bill. They told the whole restaurant that his bill would be burnt and covered, and everyone celebrated for him. We were relieved that everything had been sorted and that my cousin got the win he deserved on his birthday. We then tipped our lovely waitress 10% of the original bill and about half of the group left. When only my cousin and a few of his friends were left, they decided to leave. They thanked the waitress and she thanked them and said goodbye. Before they got out the front door, the waitress ran back to them in tears, apologising profusely and saying they had to pay their bill.It appeared the general manager had shouted at our waitress for letting them go “without paying their bill”.Little did we know, that before they “burnt our bill” for show, they made a copy of it to make us pay later when no one was paying attention anymore. They only took off the R600 that they originally mentioned. My cousin was so upset at this point, and the managers and bouncers were being so aggressive, that he just paid and left.I have never been treated so disgustingly at a place that is supposed to be enjoyable. We didn’t force them to create the competition or make promises they couldn’t keep. All we did was enter a competition at a restaurant and get the winning numbers. I guess our “lucky” win wasn’t so lucky after all.For the positives, our waitress was wonderful and the floor manager tried to help us as best he could. The vibe in the restaurant was amazing and the other customers were awesome. On a side note, when we called to book a table during the week, we were told that Hennies does not take table reservations on a Saturday. However, when we got there, a few tables had been reserved. The people who originally won the “burn the bill” competition happened to also be people who were somehow able to get a table reservation when no one else could.I hate to say anything bad about a business, as I know how difficult the industry is. But I will never be supporting this Hennies branch again, and I’m hoping that anyone who reads this thinks twice before going there. The managers are corrupt bullies, and with the way they treated us should never be allowed to work in customer service again. I hesitated even posting this because of how intimidating these men were.
